Are You Depressed?

by galedove @ 2006-05-12 - 11:29:37

Depression
Depression is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience or through depression in a family member. Each year over 17 million American adults experience a period of clinical depression. The cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depression can interfere with normal functioning, and frequently causes problems with work, social and family adjustment. It causes pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the depressed person.
Depression can affect anyone. Once identified, most people diagnosed with depression are successfully treated. Unfortunately, depression is not always diagnosed, because many of the symptoms mimic physical illness, such as sleep and appetite disturbances. Recognizing depression is the first step in treating it.
There are a number of symptoms of depression and it's very rare for all of them to occur in one person. They include feeling generally miserable, as well as:
Feelings of anxiety.
Short temper.
Blaming self and low self-esteem.
Variation of mood during the day. It's often worse in the morning, improving as the day goes on - but the pattern can be the other way around.
Disturbed sleep, usually waking early and being unable to get back to sleep. This is often because of the negative thoughts racing through their heads.etc

I feel that it's the negative thoughts that need to be addressed!

Everyone needs hope, but hope involves fighting back. There is no hope in living in a state of passive acceptism towards injustice. All psychology that says find positive feelings in serenity and acceptance, is a con motivated by ruling classes and has never been supported by any evidence. Therefore, negative thoughts about the things that need to be fought back against, remain allowed. That actually helps negative thoughts about self to fade, too.

I'm the sort of blogger who likes a bit of a look at another bloggers life. Even a little post, as long as it's written with the personal touch.
Information is ok, but after a while, it is so anonymous, that if I wanted the info I could look it up.
I'd rather learn if you have had personal experience of depression, or someone you know.
You could say I'm just nosy, but after a while, the blogs that just give info, with no personal input, become boring.

There, I've said it. Better to be honest though.

having lived in a family of 7 ,6 of whom suffer from some form of depressive illness its obvious to me that depression in todays world is at epidemic proportins.Maybe whe need to look more at the causes, maybe this consumer society has much to anser for.We reward greed and selfishness while the real hero,s of this world go unrewarded. When was the last time you read about a teenager who wasnt doing smack, stealing a car or mugging an old lady. The truth is the media and society as a whole has focused on the negatives in life is it no wonder we are all following suit?????

Hugely gritty issue. My mum and dad both suffered with Depression. It was a word that I grew up with really. You wouldn’t know it from my blog, because i mostly talk about all that’s good in my life - (which is mainly partying by the way!)

This blog has made me think that I may write a bit about my wonderful dad. He died of an accidental drug overdose when I was 18 years old. He was the most amazing human a girl could have ever wished to have as a daddy. His depression lead him to have difficulty in sleeping from a very young age and - the lack of sleep would in turn encourage the depression. Bit of a viscous circle. One which lead him to a severe addiction of sleeping pills and ultimately his death in 1999. I found him.

Depression Sucks. So much that you could get depressed about it! But I don’t. Because Im one of the lucky one’s. Im gonna update my blog in the next day or so, incase anyone is interested x

This girl, this woman here is my best friend. She is as strong as an ox. She brings me up whenever I am down and listens to me when I witter on about my father and the (sometimes difficult) relationship I have with him. What bravado she demonstrates in the face of adversity.

I love this girl.

Yup. Been there. Done that. Wasn't quite suicidal, but it was close.

I have a degree in Psychology, so I was able to pinpoint what was wrong and do some of the necessary things to get the right treatment (i.e. not drugs). I see a lot of people about with depression and am quite disturbed at the quality of treatment they get.

IMHO, YMMV etc, but there appear to me to be too many family doctors (General Practitioners) who think they can treat depression, without knowing half enough about it.

Well, if one has always been that way, as long as one can remember, and one exhibits most of the symptoms and always has, then perhaps that is a normal state and doesn't need a label.

Am I depressed? Am I? Oh god...I start crying for no apparent reason, I'm always cranky, I hate having people over...I think I know why...I just got out of Alcohol rehab, maybe that's got something to do with it...
