Pay your personal tribute to Steve Irwin

The Crocodile Hunter dies from a lethal stingray attack but leaves behind a wildlife rescue mission and a daughter ready to follow in his footsteps

He was supposed to be shooting scenes along Australia's Great Barrier Reef for a documentary he was making called Ocean's Deadliest, but the waters there were too cloudy. Never one to fritter away an idle moment, the ever-energetic adventurer and Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin decided to film a segment for his daughter Bindi's upcoming wildlife show on the Discovery Kids channel.

In fact, he was kind of looking forward to it. "He was in such a good frame of mind," says his longtime friend and producing partner John Stainton, who was with him Sept. 4 on the deck of Irwin's 75-ft. research boat Croc One. "We sat together in the early hours, 5 a.m., 6 a.m., having a cup of tea, just talking about how good life was."

Anchored at Batt Reef off the resort town of Port Douglas in Queensland, Irwin, 44, slipped into the water with his cameraman to film a school of stingrays. For a man who had tussled with crocs, venomous snakes and other frightening creatures, this was going to be a leisurely swim. Better than most anyone, he knew that stingrays are so docile that they generally put up with the prying eyes and underwater cameras of amateur divers. Then it happened.

As he was snorkeling in waters no more than 10 feet deep, he passed above a bull ray, which can grow up to seven feet in diameter. For some reason it stopped, then suddenly whipped its razor-sharp tail directly up toward Irwin and plunged the barb deep into his chest, piercing the heart.

Another friend mused that he was probably caught between two potentially mating 'rays'. We all know how protective the male of any species is, except those involved with the 'black widow' spider, of course. However, Steve's demise is beyond irony; he was so young and full of life. So sad. My heart goes out to his family; his little girl must be devastated.

When he died I was not surprised and many times I thought he's going to end up dead with the chances he takes. But still, it was a very sad thing especially when I think about Terry and the kids. A local radio station here said that the wife and the kids would be fine because they have a lot of money, as if that makes everything okay. I'm sure they would gladly sacrafice their fortune to get him back.

Shocked and saddened at the passing on of Steve Irwin. He was a guy that I only ever got a glimpse of - on screen - due to my fear and phobia of looking at snakes - so therefore I never got to see much of his contribution he gave as in i.e. enjoyment to all who admired him for his love of animals.

shocked. love all his programes. still taking it in.
his life on the edge walking with danger entertained us all while we learnt something.
the whole world will miss him.
words cant express what his family must be going thru.
bye steve

Sorry, but i might be in the minority here

1. I have the deepest sympathy for his family
2 I never watched one of his programmes all the way through
3 As far as I could tell, a lot of what he did seemed to be about putting himself into danger by annoying dangerous animals
4 I'm sure he'd have wished to go the way he did, quickly, and at the hands (tail) of an annoyed animal
