Is jet lag the bane of your life, or does that pile of revision seem insurmountable? Or perhaps you're just fed up yawning your way out of the pub at 9.30pm. Whether modern life leaves you struggling to keep up or just totally exhausted, the answer could be as simple as popping a pill.

Using drugs to improve performance in sport is nothing new – expect doping to be a hot topic at this summer's Beijing Olympics – but what about pills that do nothing to enhance biceps, glutes, or abs, and instead target the body's most powerful "muscle" – the brain?

The idea that pills could boost memory or allow weary workers to put in 24-hour shifts evokes the dystopia of Aldous Huxley's 1932 science-fiction novel Brave New World, in which humanity depends on a government-prescribed "happy" drug called Soma.

Some scientists are warning that a generation of artificially enhanced thinkers could soon become science-fact, as an increasing number of people, from stockbrokers and soldiers to students and shelf-stackers, look for something more effective than caffeine to boost performance.

The medicines they use are called cognitive- or brain-enhancing drugs. But you won't find a dedicated shelf in your local chemist's. Instead, healthy people are popping prescription pills designed to treat conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy or even Alzheimer's.

The drugs of choice are Ritalin and Modafinil. Prescribed to ADHD sufferers to help calm them down, Ritalin, dubbed "kiddie coke" by some, can boost concentration and alertness in healthy people. Modafinil, meanwhile, is designed to combat narcolepsy, but it can also stave off tiredness in those without a diagnosed sleep disorder.

The British Medical Association believes this kind of drug abuse is growing rapidly, as healthy pill-poppers dupe doctors into writing prescriptions, or buy medicines from unlicensed online pharmacies, usually based abroad.

The true scale of the problem in the UK is unknown but studies in America suggest brain-boosting drug use is rife. A 2005 survey of more than 10,000 US university students found that 4-7 per cent of them had tried ADHD drugs at least once to pull pre-exam all-nighters. At some institutions, more than one in four students said they'd sampled the pills.

Anecdotal evidence suggests as many as three in four classical musicians in the US take beta blockers such as Inderal, which block adrenalin receptors in the brain, helping to control conditions such as high blood pressure, or stage fright in jittery musicians.

Philip Harvey, a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, says his work has been transformed by Modafinil, which he takes to combat jet lag. Unlike in the UK, American doctors can prescribe the drug to night-shift workers as well as to narcoleptics. "I often fly to Europe to give talks," Harvey says. "I used to travel the day before to give myself time to recover, but with Modafinil I can now give a talk the same day I arrive and feel like I've had a normal night's sleep."

Harvey says he has no urge to take the drug more frequently, but many do. And it's not difficult to understand why. In 2003, scientists at Cambridge University found a single dose of Modafinil helped healthy male university students perform better at mental planning tests, complete puzzles more accurately and remember longer chains of digits.

The drug has also been tested by British and American armed forces, where it has been shown to help soldiers stay alert during night-time operations. Scientists say that the drug allows 48 hours of continuous wakefulness with few side effects, mild headaches being the most common.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Modafinil is that users don't have to pay back sleep "debt"; a standard eight hours is apparently enough to make up for no sleep the night before. Such impressive results have led some scientists to predict a world with little or no need for sleep, where drugs will allow us to put in 22-hour days. Little wonder, then, that the drugs companies are reportedly racing to develop the world's first marketed brain- enhancing drugs. If, or when, they do, they could make the launch of the impotence drug Viagra look like a damp squib.

"It could change society as we know it," says Barbara Sahakian, a psychiatrist at Cambridge University, who has studied cognitive-enhancing drugs. "The drive for the self-enhancement of brain power is likely to be as strong if not stronger as in the realms of enhancement of beauty or sexual function."

But that is not necessarily a good thing, Sahakian warns. "One concern I have is the lack of regulation when people buy these drugs on the internet, where they can't be absolutely certain what they are getting, or whether they should be taking them. More seriously, we have to ask how this might affect society. We control drug use in sport, so will we do the same for students who take drugs before exams, for example? And if some students or workers take them, will the others feel pressure to do the same to keep up?

"We also have to ask what this says about us – why is it that we are always looking for the quickest way around the problem? And why do we so often look to the answer in drugs rather than trying psychological therapies – or just making more time to sleep?"

Whether or not these questions can be answered, brain enhancers look set to challenge caffeine as the pick-me-up of choice in the world's offices, classrooms and war zones. Last year, Foresight, a Government think tank, said drugs such as Modafinil could be "as common as coffee" within a decade or two. That will delight hard-working professionals like Philip Harvey, who want to improve their work-life balance. But Barbara Sahakian's parting words are cautionary: "One person might say cognitive enhancing drugs are good because they allow us to get home early because we finish our work sooner, but others worry that we are working towards a 24-hours-a-day society pushed to the limits of human endurance."

 Comments

Are you too Much Heavy ?

It is very common to begin an exercise programme and start watching what you eat and find that you do lose weight. This is often because you are managing and manipulating the calorie deficit in your body and the immediate increased demands will cause you to lose weight initially as the body has to find the energy to meet the added demand. However in the long term you must ensure you maintain & even increase muscle mass in your body to keep your metabolism higher and not just increase the duration of exercise to try and burn more calories.

But weight loss is a big issue. In fact that is the toughest aim to be achieved in our day to day life. People have been trying heat belts, Herbal medicines, dieting as the ways to reduce weights. But the required results and long time effect has always been missing.

Drugs like Acomplia belong to a category called ??anorexigenic?? drugs. They suppress appetite by stimulating the hypothalamus gland and, hence, assist weight loss. Drugs like Xenical, on the other hand, attach themselves to lipases, or digestive enzymes, and prevent some of the fat in the food from being digested.

So now the time to save your time and money & be happy.

 Comments

"Will Chantix really help me quit smoking?"

Patches, gum, lozenges, acupuncture, hypnosis, artificial cigarettes, medication and cold turkey — with so many options to help you quit smoking, it's hard to know what works and what doesn't.

And now there's something new on the market to add to the mix. The FDA has approved Chantix, made by Pfizer, which is the first medication approved to help smokers quit in nearly 10 years.

Chantix was fast-tracked by the FDA because it was shown to be more effective than anything else available.

It works by both acting a little like nicotine in the brain and, at the same time, blocking the effects of nicotine when you smoke. By acting like nicotine, Chantix minimizes withdrawal symptoms. By blocking the effects of nicotine in the brain when you smoke, it limits the pleasure derived from smoking.

This approach differs from the current quit-smoking aids.

Nicotine is the addictive (but not the harmful) substance in tobacco. Withdrawal from nicotine causes the uncomfortable and often distressing symptoms of irritability, insomnia, poor concentration and upset stomach.

The patch, gum and lozenges work by providing nicotine to the body in safe form. The smoker basically maintains his or her nicotine addiction while quitting smoking. Nicotine nasal spray and inhaler, available by prescription, do the same thing.

For some smokers, nicotine replacement works because tobacco is both physically and psychologically addicting. Nicotine substitutes help offset physical withdrawal while the smoker concentrates on the psychological withdrawal — giving up the habit, not the addiction.

Other quit-smoking aids work to reduce cravings without providing the nicotine — hypnosis and acupuncture have proven effective for some. Zyban, also sold as Wellbutrin, is a prescription medication that also helps reduce the cravings.

Unlike Zyban, Chantix acts like nicotine on the brain as a means of reducing cravings. Studies on Chantix found that up to 50 percent of smokers stayed smoke-free after 12 weeks of medication. Results improved even more after 24 weeks of therapy.

By contrast, there was only a 30 percent quit rate for those on Zyban. Those taking a placebo saw a 17 percent quit rate.

Studies also showed that patients are able to stop taking Chantix without difficulty. The most common side effect is mild nausea, which usually improves after one to two weeks of therapy.

Chantix also comes with a yearlong support program that is essential for some smokers to remaining smoke free. The program is done online or by phone. More information can be found at www.chantix.com.

Chantix is covered by some insurance plans. However, even when it's not covered, the cost of $4 per day is lower than a pack-a-day habit.

Every smoker is different, and which method is best differs from person to person. When planning to quit, your physician can be helpful planning the right strategy for you. If one method does not work, try another. If the patche doesn't work, try the gum. If Zyban doesn't work, try the patch. Your doctor may recommend combining different therapies.

Quitting smoking is one of the greatest challenges you will ever face. It is often fraught with multiple attempts and relapses. The key is not to be able to quit the first time you try, but to keep trying.

If you feel you have tried everything and failed, Chantix is now available. This might just be the one that does it for you. The key to is to keep trying.

He was supposed to be shooting scenes along Australia's Great Barrier Reef for a documentary he was making called Ocean's Deadliest, but the waters there were too cloudy. Never one to fritter away an idle moment, the ever-energetic adventurer and Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin decided to film a segment for his daughter Bindi's upcoming wildlife show on the Discovery Kids channel.

In fact, he was kind of looking forward to it. "He was in such a good frame of mind," says his longtime friend and producing partner John Stainton, who was with him Sept. 4 on the deck of Irwin's 75-ft. research boat Croc One. "We sat together in the early hours, 5 a.m., 6 a.m., having a cup of tea, just talking about how good life was."

Anchored at Batt Reef off the resort town of Port Douglas in Queensland, Irwin, 44, slipped into the water with his cameraman to film a school of stingrays. For a man who had tussled with crocs, venomous snakes and other frightening creatures, this was going to be a leisurely swim. Better than most anyone, he knew that stingrays are so docile that they generally put up with the prying eyes and underwater cameras of amateur divers. Then it happened.

As he was snorkeling in waters no more than 10 feet deep, he passed above a bull ray, which can grow up to seven feet in diameter. For some reason it stopped, then suddenly whipped its razor-sharp tail directly up toward Irwin and plunged the barb deep into his chest, piercing the heart.

The treatment keeps nicotine from reaching the brain, making smoking less pleasurable and theoretically, easier to give up. The small amount that still manages to get in helps to ease withdrawal, the main reason most quitters relapse.

If it works, the vaccine could become part of a new generation of smoking cessation treatments.

The drugs attack dependency in the brain instead of just replacing the nicotine from cigarettes in a less harmful way, like the gum, lozenges, patches and nasal sprays sold today.

One such drug, Pfizer Inc.'s Chantix, is due on the market any day now. Another, Sanofi-Aventis SA's Acomplia, recently won approval in Europe as a weight loss drug. If U.S. regulators follow suit, some doctors say they also will use it to help smokers quit, especially those concerned about gaining weight.

Other novel drugs are in development, but NicVax, by Nabi Biopharmaceuticals -- a Boca Raton, Fla., biotech company with labs in Rockville, Md. -- is most advanced among the vaccines.

The Food and Drug Administration has granted the vaccine fast-track status, meaning it will get prompt review, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse just gave Nabi a second $4-million grant to finance the study and NicVax's development.

"It's going to be a very good way to keep people from relapsing," said Dr. Frank Vocci, director of medications development at the federal institute.

Relapse is the biggest problem quitters face.

Of the more than 48 million smokers in the United States, 40% each year make a serious attempt to quit, but fewer than 5% have long-term success. Nicotine-replacement products combined with counseling can double that rate, but most quitters don't try them. Two-thirds go back to smoking within a month.

 Comments

This is for you.....please pass to all people that you know

In love and life don’t ever play games. If you love someone, TELL them, if you don’t, TELL them. The human heart is a very complex thing in that it makes us do the strangest things when it reaches a point of desperation especially when we are hurting. I’m sure many of us have reached that point where we find ourselves attacking the competition “in the name of LOVE” even attacking the object of your affection, some of us have even found ourselves hiding behind bushes or tagging the car playing spy.

At the end of it all, relationships, whether friendships or romance, need two elements to survive - COMMUNICATION and COMPROMISE and it needs another two elements two fall apart – PRIDE AND STUPIDITY.

Too proud to say I’m sorry, too proud to say I’m hurting, too proud to say I’m feeling a little insecure. And so stupid, stupid enough to let them go because you think they will be back, stupid enough not to tell them that you love them because you think they will stick around longer if you play hard to get, stupid enough not to answer their calls when you have a fight because you want to make them hurt and you want to teach them a lesson they’ll never forget. Watch out you are not the one who learns a lesson. If it’s worth a great person walking out of your life, possibly for good, then by all means knock yourself out.

But don’t cry when that person never calls again, or finds solace in another’s arms, or throws themselves off a twenty story building because the pain you were causing them was too much to bear.

Don’t cry when a beautiful relationship is broken and can’t be fixed because YOU chose to play games instead of laying your cards on the table and working it out. Say exactly what you feel and ask exactly what you want to know. No matter how STUPID you sound. At least you will know exactly where you stand.

And even if after you’ve poured your heart and it still doesn’t work out, you will be at peace because you know you did your best on your part. Your conscience will be clear and you will move on knowing that you didn’t go down without a fight.

Loving someone is not a game.

People are not pyramids; you can’t go off on your own selfish trip and expect to find them in the exact same spot you left them weeks ago. If you don’t take care of your partners needs when they need you to, what guarantee do you have that somebody else won’t.

So when you find your partner in your best friend’s arms or hear they are getting married to someone you thought was just a “rebound trip” after you let them go without a fight:

If these figures are accurate, it means that about one quarter of all Americans who are HIV positive don't know it.
25 years ago today, AIDS was first mentioned as 5 Los Angeles males were identified. At that time the five men were mentioned, but not the name of their illness and how or why they got ill.

At first everyone thought AIDS only infected gay men and drug addicts who used syringes. However, over the last couple of decades various groups have become infected. In the USA and much of the developed world the number of people becoming infected with HIV has been growing among heterosexual women and older people.

Here are some facts (USA):
-- Today 25% of new infections are among women

-- 67% of female infections are among African-American women

-- 17% of female infections are among Caucasian women

-- 15% of female infections are among Hispanic women

-- In 1985 3% of infections resulted from heterosexual sex

-- In 2004 31% of infections resulted from heterosexual sex

-- Washington D.C. has the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the USA

The HIV test involves a mouth swab. Results appear in about 20 minutes.

The Food and Drug Administration FDA approved the use of Relenza (zanamivir for inhalation) for prevention (prophylaxis) of influenza (flu) in adults and children 5 years of age and older. Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) previously was approved for both prevention and treatment of flu; today's approval of Relenza for prevention provides Americans with another option for the prevention of influenza A and B infections.

Breathing problems (bronchospasm), including deaths, were reported in some patients after the initial approval of Relenza. Most of these patients had asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Relenza therefore is not recommended for treatment or prophylaxis of seasonal influenza in individuals with underlying airways disease such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Relenza has not been proven effective for treatment of influenza in people with underlying airways disease, or for prevention of influenza in nursing homes. The drug is also not a substitute for the flu vaccine, which is the primary means for preventing influenza. Consumers should continue receiving an annual flu vaccination according to guidelines on immunization practices. In preparation for a potential pandemic, FDA has assembled an agency-wide Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Task Force to provide policy leadership and strategic planning on pandemic influenza.

FDA also is working with the pharmaceutical industry to make available appropriate products and ensure that mechanisms are in place to collect the necessary efficacy and safety information. Both Relenza and Tamiflu have been identified for stockpiling.

Depression is one of the most common psychological problems, affecting nearly everyone through either personal experience or through depression in a family member. Each year over 17 million American adults experience a period of clinical depression. The cost in human suffering cannot be estimated. Depression can interfere with normal functioning, and frequently causes problems with work, social and family adjustment. It causes pain and suffering not only to those who have a disorder, but also to those who care about them. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the depressed person.
Depression can affect anyone. Once identified, most people diagnosed with depression are successfully treated. Unfortunately, depression is not always diagnosed, because many of the symptoms mimic physical illness, such as sleep and appetite disturbances. Recognizing depression is the first step in treating it.
There are a number of symptoms of depression and it's very rare for all of them to occur in one person. They include feeling generally miserable, as well as:
Feelings of anxiety.
Short temper.
Blaming self and low self-esteem.
Variation of mood during the day. It's often worse in the morning, improving as the day goes on - but the pattern can be the other way around.
Disturbed sleep, usually waking early and being unable to get back to sleep. This is often because of the negative thoughts racing through their heads.etc

Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. Nicotine is highly addictive. Over time, the body becomes physically and psychologically dependent on nicotine. When smoke is inhaled, nicotine is carried deep into the lungs, where it is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body. Nicotine affects many parts of the body, including your heart and blood vessels, your hormonal system, your metabolism, and your brain. Smoking increases the risk of lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. No matter what your age or how long you've smoked, quitting will help you live longer.

Medicines for quiting smoking are also available.Zyban is one of them. Zyban is used to help quit smoking. Bupropion, also known by the brand name Zyban is FDA-approved prescription medication for use in smoking cessation treatment. Zyban increases the amount of norephineprine and dopamine in the brain.

For example, almost half of all breast cancer cases occur in obese women. Also, cancerous breast tumors are notoriously hard to find in young women with more than 15-20 percent excess body fat. Exactly how severe overeight leads to breast cancers is not yet known. The link between body mass index and breast cancer is mostly statistical. We can see it, but we don't understand exactly why it exists.

Fat distribution, not fat amount is a leading predictor of your future health. Carrying your weight around your waist could put you at a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes. Losing even 2 inches in your waist area could reduce the risk dramatically.

Mild obesity involving a body mass index (BMI) of 30+, is less dangerous to health than morbid obesity (BMI 40+) or malignant obesity (BMI 50+). For example, someone who is 40 percent overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as an average-weight person. This effect is seen after 10 to 30 years of being obese.

Abdominal obesity is one of the core symptoms of cardiovascular disease and insulin resistance syndrome. In women, central obesity is signalled by a waist circumference of about 35+ inches, while in men the danger waist measurement is 40+ inches. Alternatively, check your waist-hip ratio. Women with a waist-to-hip ratio of more than 0.8 or men with waist-to-hip ratios of more than 1.0 are "apples" and are at increased health risk due to their fat distribution.
